We restore antiques and tired, old pieces of furniture, giving them new life for generations to come.
So, how does this work?
Firstly, tell us about your project and aspirations, and then we’ll discuss a few alternatives.
Refurbishing a chair can mean you have to strip it down to its basics to be left with the core item. It often means that some small repairs will have to be done.
Here are below the main steps.
Step 1 | Establish your objectives

For this piece of furniture: give this beautiful piece of furniture a more contemporary look.
This meant working both on the wood work as well as a new fabric make it comfier as the current fabric was really slippery.
So, this is the ‘before’ picture!
Step 2 | Stripping down

Here, the varnish and tint were carefully removed from the wooden frame.
It was firstly painted in white. Then, again, this was lightly sanded down (all by hand).
The seat is now ready to start the upholstery process.
Step 3 | Webbing & Lashing The Springs

Mark the springs on the web and then sew them using a spring needle.
The main challenge here is to make sure that the lashing is balanced and symmetrical.
The seat is now ready to welcome some ‘smoother’ items.
Step 4 | Hessian Cover

The objective now is to tie the hessian to the springs.
This is achieved by using a spring needle and nylon. Again, the balance is key.
The seat is now ready for stuffing.
Step 5 | Horse’s Hair

The first objective is to form the underlying shapes.
It is very common to use some horse’s hair to achieve this. To make sure it is evenly spread, a wight balance is being used.
The chair is ready to get its second layer.
Step 6 | Stuffing

The second objective is to soften up the chair and bring back the comfort.
This is achieved by adding some cotton wadding and cotton felt – if you are to use inly the traditional techniques – and foam.
Can’t wait to add some calico now!
Step 7 | White Lining

Using a wooded planche as well as some tools will facilitate the process.
This will guarantee that a constant and even pressure is applied.
This was the final stage before adding the final fabric.
Step 8 | Finishing

A navy wool fabric from Holland &Sherry -Saville Row- was used for the new upholstery.
Bring a personal note by adding a colourful (and patriotic) cushion!
Please note that the trimming hasn’t been added yet. It will be though as you don’t want to see the pins ;).
